✍️ Reflections From My Practice - What's Happening Inside Me Right Now?
I've noticed that sometimes the hardest part of supporting a child's big behaviour isn't understanding what the child needs.
It's managing what the behaviour brings up in 𝘂𝘀.
A child screams.
We feel our shoulders tense.
A child refuses again.
We hear ourselves getting louder.
A child hits.
Our own anger rises.
And suddenly we're reacting rather than responding.
This is why I talk about 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲™.
Not as a technique for making children behave.
But as an opportunity for the adult to create a little space.
A breath.
A moment.
A chance to notice:
“W𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄?”
Because our own regulation doesn't have to be perfect. But when we can create even a little more space between the trigger and our response, we have more choice about what happens next.
And sometimes that small pause changes the whole interaction.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. It's making space to respond with intention.
𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂?
